Healthcare in Rwanda

After the tragic Rwandan genocide in 1994, Rwanda Children was founded to provide food, medicine, love, and spiritual care for the local children. Without Rwanda Children, these families would have great difficulty finding the resources they need. Many families received transformative services this past year, and we wanted to share a few highlights.

Over 330 new moms received maternity care in the Joy Maternity Wing, including education on nutrition, hygiene and child care. 175 of these new moms delivered their healthy babies there at the center!

Over 1,000 patients received dental care, including general care and restorative treatments. Children and adults both are grateful to have healthy dental hygiene.

Over 860 people received eye care and education from an ophthalmologist. Restorative treatments allowed many to regain independence and mobility.

Patients also received in house blood tests and screening in order to properly address their health issues. Now locals can avoid these tests that are very expensive at local hospitals.

Rwanda Children is a calming, fun environment dedicated to children exams, helping them feel comfortable and safe.

3 New Believers in Mexico

Recently, Pastor Brigido took a group of volunteers to the small village of Xilitla, Mexico. He was teaching them how to share the gospel while showing cultural respect and Christ-like hospitality. The group was surprised at the warm reception they received, particularly from the unbelievers in the community.

The villagers welcomed the volunteers into their homes, and Pastor Brigido and his group were able to bring much needed food baskets directly to their kitchens, providing the opportunity for personal conversations with each family. Along with the gospel message, each volunteer was able to share their own testimony. As a result, three villagers trusted Christ as their Savior!

Praise God for Romualdo, Bertha, and Genaro, our new brothers and sister in Christ!

Please pray for these three new believers to be open to discipleship from this local church so they can continue to learn more about Jesus. Pray also for these volunteers as they grow in their faith and ability to share the gospel.

A Gift to Our Partners

Our Christmas Gift to You

This Christmas, instead of sending each of our HOPE Partners an appreciation gift as we’ve done in years past, we decided to do something a bit different. In honor and appreciation of you, our HOPE Partners, we have provided 58 water filters to families in a small village in the state of Santa Bárbara, Honduras who also heard the gospel story.

Here’s the backstory:

In August of this year, Pastor Arnulfo approached HOPE Coffee with the request for clean water filters for the families in this remote village. When our team heard about this opportunity, we immediately thought this would be a great “Christmas Gift” to our HOPE Partners as a way to say “Thank you!” for choosing HOPE Coffee. So, instead of sending you a physical “Christmas Gift”, we bought these water filters.

And here is the rest of the story:

Throughout September and October, HOPE Coffee purchased the water filters and bucket supplies, while Pastor Carlos worked with Pastor Arnulfo and his church to prepare to share the gospel using the water filters as an analogy.

On November 11th, as the pastors shared how to use these filters to clean the water from the mountain, they explained how Jesus’ death and resurrection cleans us from the death penalty of sin when we trust in Him.

We praise God that Lilian, Helen, Wendy, and Baudilia trusted Christ as their Savior! In addition, a woman named Nohemí chose to rededicate her life to Jesus.

As a result of your choice to brew HOPE Coffee in your homes, churches offices and coffee shops, along with the efforts of Pastors Arnulfo and Carlos in Honduras, many people heard the gospel message while receiving water filters. Because of your generosity and love for the farmers who grow HOPE Coffee and the people living in their countries, you have once again changed lives. Thank you!

2024 Lan Vwa Graduates

October was an exciting month for the students of Lan Vwa! Children who once were bound to a life of poverty in rural Guatemala graduated from Lan Vwa and celebrated bright futures with their families.

In Guatemala, the public school system runs from 1st through 6th grade. Outside of these six years, school is only for those who can afford it. Children of coffee farmers rarely have the means or access to higher education, which contributes to the crushing cycle of poverty.

The Leiva family started Lan Vwa in 2012 to provide education and the Hope of Jesus Christ for these children in need. Over a decade later, yet another class of underprivileged children graduated with the tools they need to succeed.

Jesmin, a 2024 graduate, highlights the incredible spiritual impact Lan Vwa has on students. She attended church before becoming a student at Lan Vwa, but did not yet have a relationship with Jesus. Once she began attending Lan Vwa, she learned how to have a personal relationship with Jesus and asked Him to be her Savior! She graduated in October, and is planning to further her education in Business Administration. Jesmin not only received the education she needed to break the cycle of poverty, but she also placed her faith in One who breaks the chains of sin and death.

Coffee Harvesting Season

It’s coffee harvesting season!

Every fall, the coffee farmers in Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico hire skilled coffee pickers who will meticulously hand pick only the ripest coffee cherries off each coffee tree. These pickers wear rubber boots, a hat, and a basket strapped to their waist that carries up to 35 pounds of coffee cherries. They do this on the steep hills of the coffee farm. Once they finish picking, they carry the cherries down to the trucks that will transport them to the processing plant. At these plants, the cherries are de-pulped – the process of removing the beans from the center of the cherries – and then washed. Then the green coffee beans are patio dried, carefully packed, and shipped to the United States where they are roasted.

In order to care well for the farmers who grow HOPE Coffee, we choose to have direct trade relationships with them, in which we pay them above market value for their coffee. In addition, these coffee farmers provide safe conditions and fair wages to their pickers, and often share the gospel with them! It’s a joy to see these coffee farmers share the love of Jesus!

Job, one of the farmers who grows our Honduran line, told our team this month, “we’re incredibly grateful to HOPE Coffee and their customers for enjoying the coffee we work so hard to produce. Your appreciation makes every effort worthwhile.”

7 Families Receive Hope

Pastor Heber’s faithfulness brought about more joy than he could have imagined. Heber recently planted a church in Veracruz, Mexico with his wife. In order to reach out to his community, he chose to donate food baskets to 7 local families living in poverty. After pastor Heber received funds from HOPE Coffee for these food baskets, Heber purchased food the very next day and was ready to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Heber documented each beautiful moment when the 7 families received food and the gospel message. We wanted to encourage you with these stories of God pursuing His children in Veracruz. All glory be to God!

Conchita recently had surgery and despite her pain she works to provide for her four grandchildren. Her daughter helps out as well, but they do not have enough to meet their basic needs. A few weeks before, Conchita visited Heber’s new church, so when Heber and his wife brought them a food basket, she was shocked that he would think of them! Heber prayed with this family and reminded them of Christ’s love for them.
An elderly woman named Virginia attended Heber’s church regularly for some time. However, her husband died in January of this year. Pastor Heber and his wife grieved with her and visited her regularly. When they arrived with a food basket, Virginia cried tears of awe. Earlier she had heard a voice say “You are not alone. I care for you, and I will surprise you with a blessing at your front door.” Heber joyfully told her that the Lord knows every detail of her situation and cares for her. She hugged Heber and his wife and expressed her gratitude!
Celia, an older woman, lives with her daughter who works to provide for them both. Her daughter was in desperate need of diapers for her children, and Heber made sure that they received these along with their food basket. These sweet ladies were tremendously grateful for these resources!
Jorge and Esther attend Pastor Heber’s church, and Heber invited them to help purchase and deliver food baskets. They were hesitant as they are still opening up to Christianity after some difficult past experiences. God continued to work in their hearts, and after a long day of work, the couple went to Heber’s house and helped deliver food baskets. Once they returned to his home afterward, Heber gave them a food basket as well! They were so happy they forgot how tired they were. Pastor Heber and his wife continue to disciple this couple and pray that they would see God’s provision in their lives.
Luis and his wife are an elderly couple abandoned by their son. She has osteoporosis and is not able to get around on her own. The Lord saw this sweet couple and three members of Heber’s church brought them a food basket and prayed with them. Despite their limitations, the couple was able to visit the church and receive encouragement.
Martin is a mason but has not been able to find consistent work. Because of this he lives in poverty. He was able to visit Heber’s church twice, and was later shocked when Heber called letting him know he was going to donate a food basket to him. He immediately had a huge smile on his face and expressed his thankfulness through tears. Martin was overwhelmed by this church’s kindness to him
During the pandemic, Ana Maria’s husband died. Heber and his wife faithfully visited her as she suffered from grief and depression. She now suffers from water in her lungs and is in need of prayer. Heber and his wife brought her a food basket and she was extremely surprised and grateful!

In every one of these visits, Heber told the food basket recipients that many brothers and sisters in Christ are praying for them. This brought immense comfort to the families. Please join us in praying for these families in need. Specifically for salvation, health, food, shelter, and safety. Because of your coffee purchases, HOPE Coffee was able to fund these food baskets. Dyness Receives Christ-Centered Education

Tanzania Christian Services funds one of the 9 clinics that Compassion Tea supports, but did you know they also fund a school? This school’s vision is to use Christian education as a tool for breaking the cycle of poverty that is commonly found in Tanzania. A very small percentage of children in Africa advance to secondary school, so Tanzania Christian Services decided to help.

We want to share about one kind young woman named Dyness who attended Alpha Omega Christian Secondary School. Four years ago, Dyness came to Alpha Omega as a shy 8th grader. Today, she is part of the 5th graduating class!

With overwhelming gratitude, she thanked her teachers by saying, “I know my words won’t be enough and only God can repay you back for your good, kind, and devoted hearts…. God be with you until we meet again. I will really miss you all but memories of you will remain in me as long as I live.”

This amazing school has served over 200 students like Dyness over the years, and the clinic associated with the school has provided thousands with medical care.

One New Roof and Two New Believers

Conchito and his wife Lourdes lived in poor conditions in Honduras when she became ill and was hospitalized. Once she began her recovery at home, Pastor Ramon came to visit them and care for them. The couple was touched, and they asked him, “teach us to pray.” With joy, Pastor Ramon taught them how, and they immediately prayed for a roof for the home they were building since they did not have enough resources.

The very next morning, Carlos, a National Ministry Leader with HOPE Coffee, called Pastor Ramon letting him know that HOPE Coffee wanted to provide a shelter for a family in need. Ramon was in awe and praised God for his provision. Through the process of this new roof being installed on the couple’s home, both Conchito and Lourdes surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ on May 13th, 2024! They not only have a new, safe home being constructed, they also have HOPE in Jesus!

Pray that their 8 year old son would also trust in Jesus through the witness of his parents, and for Ramon as he disciples the couple. Please also pray for Omar, a shop owner of building materials, who Pastor Ramon shared the gospel with during the building process. He is receptive to the gospel but has not yet trusted Christ.

Meet Abelardo

Have you ever wondered how we discover needs in Central America? Or how we learn about specific families who have never heard the gospel? We have three incredible National Ministry Leaders who are the hands and feet of HOPE Coffee in Central America. Today, we want you to meet Abelardo in Mexico!

Abelardo and his wife Sandy have two daughters. Sandy serves at their church in Puebla, Mexico by leading women’s Bible studies. Their two daughters, Anita and Vania serve on the church worship team and lead Bible studies for their college classmates. Anita studies music and Vania studies international relations. The love of learning runs in the family, as Sandy is taking life skills classes while Abelardo works on a Masters degree in Economic Development and International Cooperation. Abelardo faithfully shares the gospel with his classmates as they discuss different views. His faithfulness to the gospel also extends beyond the classroom and into the community through his position as a National Ministry Leader at HOPE Coffee.

Each week, Abelardo seeks service projects throughout Mexico by working with local pastors to identify a family in need. He then helps the pastor collect pictures and details about a potential project that will facilitate a Gospel conversation with the family. After he presents the information to HOPE Coffee leadership, we pray over the family as we ask for God’s wisdom. Once the project is approved, the funds that HOPE Coffee has donated to Create Hope are sent to the pastor. Abelardo then follows up each week to receive progress reports, pictures and receipts.

In each of these projects, Abelardo involves members of the local churches so they can develop long term relationships with the families.
